TUNE IN THIS WEEKEND OCT 16TH - SPEED TV WSBK - After another enthralling series which has spanned three continents and 12 countries, the 2011 World Superbike Championship now heads to Portimão in Portugal for the season finale, where everyone is hoping to sign off on a high.

With the formalities already decided last time out at Magny Cours, when Carlos Checa took the championship crown, all the riders are now looking for a strong finish to the season to carry some momentum into the winter months. Last time out Leon Haslam and Troy Corser had a successful race weekend with their largest combined points total of the season scored to date on the BMW S 1000 RR and therefore both riders are hoping for even more in Sunday’s two races at Portimão.

A fully-focused Troy Corser commented: “I like riding at Portimão. It has lots of elevation changes and I think that the track will suit our RR due to its fast, flowing nature. There are a few crests at Portimão where the front end really wants to lift off and the bike wants to wheelie due to the power of the engine. This can cause problems if you don’t get the set-up right so we need to work on this area.

“Personally I am really optimistic. To go fast in Portimão you need a bike that is steering well and we have this in the RR. It is an area in which we improved with the chassis set-up and I was quite happy with the settings we found in Magny-Cours. So we are aiming to find a similar set-up and the same feeling at Portimão. We will also try to improve the tyre life over a race distance and if we can do that we should be in a good position.”

After two impressive rides at Magny-Cours which saw the hard-charging Brit claim a third and a fourth respectively, Leon Haslam is now hoping for even more as the season comes to a close in Portugal. Having found a good feeling with the RR in recent months Haslam is full of confidence and is setting his sights high.

“We are looking forward to the season finale. The last few races we have been getting the most out of our RR and that makes me confident. For sure, we still have some small issues, but we will work on them. It is the last round of the year and we are always pushing for the first win. We are trying to get on the podium in every race.

“The track is very up and down and that can cause the bike to wheelie. So it is a challenge to find the right set-up for these characteristics. Last season I had two second places, so it is a circuit that I enjoy. The weather looks very good for the weekend and we are optimistic that we can have two more good races.”

The final word as always goes to the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team director Bernhard Gobmeier, who is happy with the recent progress and is subsequently full of optimism going into Portimão.

“We take the momentum of our successful Sunday at Magny-Cours with us to the Algarve. We showed in France, that we are able to fight for podium places and our lap times were among the best, and of course we want to repeat that at the season's finale. We are looking forward to another two exciting races in Portugal, where we hope to see our RR in the leading group and at the very top.

After the finale we will not have time to catch our breath because as soon as the 2011 season is finished, we will focus all our attention towards preparations for next year. We will stay at Portimão and test there next Tuesday with our 2012 bike, which is further developed and improved in numerous areas.”
